Magic 8 Balls, Liquid, and Air Freight

Every Magic 8 Ball is filled with liquid — that's what makes the die float and turn. It's a small thing that creates a surprising number of questions about flying, customs, and freight. After seven years of shipping these, here's everything we've learned, in plain terms.

Can you fly with a Magic 8 Ball?

Not in your carry-on. TSA treats the liquid inside as, well, liquid, and the volume is over the carry-on limit. Security will pull it out of your bag, and you'll be given the choice of checking it or leaving it behind.

Checked baggage is fine. Magic 8 Balls are permitted in checked luggage with no special declaration. If you're traveling to a trade show with a box of giveaways, check them. We've had customers lose an entire case at a security checkpoint because nobody thought about it until the airport, and it's a bad way to start a show.

The better option: ship to the venue

For anything over a handful of units, don't fly with them at all. We ship directly to hotels, convention centers, and event handling services all the time. Give us the venue address, the show name, and your booth number, and we'll label the boxes the way the venue expects. It's less hassle and usually cheaper than checking extra bags.

How we ship your order

Most orders travel by air freight, which is what keeps the total delivery window at 20 days. Larger orders sometimes go by sea if the timeline allows and you'd rather save on freight — worth asking about if you're planning months ahead.

Liquid declaration and paperwork

This is the part that trips up inexperienced suppliers. Liquid-filled goods need proper declaration on the air waybill and supporting documentation for customs. We prepare all of it: accurate product description, liquid declaration, material documentation, and commercial invoices.

Done right, it's routine and your shipment moves through without a second look. Done wrong, the whole pallet sits in a customs warehouse while someone tries to work out what's inside. We've seen customers arrive at us after exactly that happened with other manufacturers, and it's the main reason we handle documentation in-house rather than leaving it to a freight broker.

Packaging

Every unit is individually boxed before it goes into the shipping carton. That's partly about presentation — an individually boxed item feels like a gift rather than a handout — but mostly it's about protection. Loose balls in a carton knock against each other for thousands of miles. Individually boxed ones arrive looking new.

The delivery timeline

1. Artwork and proof. You send your logo and twenty answers; we send a free proof. Revisions are free.
2. Production: 15 days. This starts the day you approve the proof, not the day you inquire.
3. Freight and clearance. Air freight plus customs handling.
4. Total: 20 days for most orders, with free shipping within the USA.

You can ask for a status update at any point and we'll tell you where the order actually is. If something slips — a customs hold, a weather delay at a hub — you'll hear it from us before you have to ask.

Planning around your event date

The single most useful thing you can do is tell us your hard deadline in your first message. We'll work backward from it and tell you the last day we can receive approved artwork. If the date isn't realistic, we'd rather say so than take the order and disappoint you.

My general advice: build in a two-week buffer beyond the 20 day window. Not because we expect problems, but because it means a customs question or a shipping hiccup doesn't turn into a crisis the week of your show.

Costs, minimums, and returns

Shipping within the USA is free at every quantity. Pricing runs $6.99 per unit at 100+ ($699), $5.85 at 300+ ($1,755), $4.90 at 500+ ($2,450), and $4.20 at 1000+ ($4,200). A single sample is $1.00. The minimum order is 100 units for every size we make — 4.5cm keychain, 7cm standard, 10cm large, and 12cm giant.

If your order arrives and it isn't right, we offer 90-day free returns. Transit damage is rare with individual boxing, but if it happens, send us a photo and we'll sort it out quickly.
